Queens puzzle: rules and strategy

Queens is a logic puzzle on a coloured grid. Place one crown in every row, every column and every colour region, and never let two crowns touch, not even at a corner. Every board has exactly one solution, so you never need to guess.

Queens rules

How to solve Queens: 5 tips

1. Start with the smallest region

A region of one cell holds its crown right away. A region of two or three cells leaves only a few places to try.

2. Lock rows and columns

If a whole region lies inside one row, that row’s crown must be in that region. Mark every other cell of the row with ✕. The same works for columns.

3. Count regions against rows

If two regions fit entirely inside the same two rows, those two rows belong to them. Clear every other cell in those rows. This works for any number of regions and rows.

4. Look for cells that kill a region

If a crown on some cell would cover every remaining cell of another region (its row, column and the eight neighbours), that cell can never hold a crown.

5. Clean up after every crown

When you place a crown, mark its row, column, region and all eight neighbours. New single options usually appear at once.
